Exploring the Wonders of the American West
When Mr. and I decided to embark on a family adventure, we knew we wanted to explore somewhere entirely new for all of us. After some deliberation, we settled on a thrilling RV road trip through the mesmerizing landscapes of the American West, setting our sights on Glacier National Park, Kalispell, and Whitefish.
The key to a successful road trip with our two little ones? Timing everything around their nap and bedtime schedules. Departing from LA late at night was a strategic move, allowing the kids to sleep peacefully as we made our way to our first stop: Las Vegas. The Discovery Children's Museum was an absolute hit with the kids, setting an energetic tone for the rest of our journey.
Our route took us through St. George, Utah, followed by a stop in Lehi, where we boondocked at Walmart. The unexpectedly picturesque boondocking spot offered a level surface and a stunning wooded view, making our stay quite delightful.
Unfortunately, our plans to visit Thanksgiving Point were dashed when both kids caught a stomach bug. However, a bit of rest and some TV time helped them recover, allowing us to enjoy Cold Spring Trout Farm in Ogden. The kids had a blast fishing and exploring the petting farm.
The next stop Yellowstone provided one of the most memorable drives for Mr. was the eerie yet enchanting nighttime journey to Grant Village Campground, passing geysers illuminated by the full moon's light.
As we journeyed, we made stops at various points of interest, including Old Faithful and Madison Campground, allowing the kids to run wild and explore. Big Sky was a gem where we indulged in delicious eats at the Hungry Moose Market and Deli and let the kids loose at Big Sky Community Park.
Our stay at North Helena KOA was charming and we enjoyed exploring Helena, MT a ton. Lake Alva, our afternoon stop, turned out to be an unexpected highlight, filled with hiking, beach play, and a cozy bonfire.
Exploring Whitefish, Kalispell, and Glacier National Park was a dream come true. We spent several days in the area, soaking in the majestic landscapes and vibrant local culture.
On our return journey, we discovered the charming allure of Missoula and savored the off-the-beaten-track exploration at Clark Fork Natural Area, which was a hit with the kids.
Dillon, Montana, with its fantastic park, offered the kids a brief but exciting break. Our stay at Colter Bay Campground amid the grandeur of the Grand Tetons was awe-inspiring.
Wrapping up our trip, we enjoyed a lovely stay with friends in Salt Lake City before heading back home via revisits to St. George and Las Vegas.
Maintaining a rhythm of stops every 2-4 hours helped keep us and the kids refreshed and energized throughout the journey. As the kids grow and nap times become a thing of the past, we'll need to rethink our strategy for future adventures.
Our RV road trip through the American West was an unforgettable experience, filled with unexpected twists, beautiful discoveries, and cherished family moments. Until next time, as we plan our next escapade, this journey will remain etched in our memories as one of pure exploration and joy.
